Set up in 2001, the .NAME universal top-level domain extension is the sole TLD meant for personal web pages only. These domain names can include personal or fictional names, nicknames and/or other titles people are popular by. Initially, just 3rd-level registrations were permitted, so if you wished to purchase john.doe.name, you would have to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was loosened and 2nd-level registrations were also allowed. Already purchased 3rd-level domains remained online.
